Abstract

We report on the first 1024×1024 switch designed in a planar lightwave circuit. This level of integration is enabled by the ultrahigh refractive index contrast achievable in our polymer platform, which is 30% in buried-channel waveguides. The number of building-block 1×2 Y-branch thermo-optic digital optical switches used to achieve strictly non-blocking functionality is 2,095,104. Our most compact design allows 4 chips to fit on a 6-inch wafer. We present architectures, design considerations, and implementation schemes.
