Abstract
Directly heated silicon-waveguide thermal Mach-Zehnder switches have switching times < 50 ns and a switching power from 0.1 to 5.5 mW. Modeling indicates that thermal switching times < 1 ns can be obtained with powers less than that required by other photonic integrated circuit compatible technologies.
