Optical Modulation Using Depletion-Mode PN-Junctions in Thin Silicon-On-Insulator Waveguides

We report on depletion-mode pn-junction based silicon optical modulation in thin silicon- on-insulator material. A change in effective index of approximately-2×10−5 was measured in a fabricated device and compared with simulations.
