Abstract
Molecular hydrogen or deuterium diffused into conventional solid-silica optical fibers (gas-in-glass) exhibits stimulated Raman gain.1,2 Optical gain as high as 35 dB at 1.56 μm has been demonstrated2 in deuterium-charged fibers pumped by 130 W of 1.06-pm Nd:YAG laser light. The operation of a synchronously pumped gas-in-glass laser operating at 1.56 μm is reported.
