Abstract
Large nonlinear optical effects have been observed in liquid crystals in the isotropic state1 and have been used in phase conjugation,2 self-focusing, and optical bistability. These experiments were restricted to the earliest liquid materials MBBA and EBBA, and studies do not appear to have been made of the recently developed cyanobiphenyls, which are chemically more stable and have a significantly different molecular structure.
