Control of Profile and Chirp of Femtosecond Light Pulses by Propagating Them through Resonant and Nonresonant Optical Media.

Abstract

Transmission and reflection of passive elements can be used to control the shape—in amplitude and phase—of femtosecond pulses. A resonantly enhanced nonlinearity has to be used to phase modulate efficiently the relatively weak pulse created by a dye laser. Subsequent transmission through dielectrics or reflection by properly tailored coatings can produce chirp compensation and pulse compression. The transmission characteristics of each of these elements has been calculated and measured.
