Abstract

We have studied dual-mode operation of a cw standing-wave laser using an intracavity Michelson interferometer for mode control. We have phase locked the intermode difference frequency to a laboratory-frequency synthesizer, while scanning the optical frequency many gigahertz. Alternatively, one can tune one mode differentially by ±750 kHz while the other mode remains stabilized at the kilohertz level.1 These capabilities would be decisive for certain Ramsey fringe studies using longitudinal interaction.2
