Abstract

Essential to the unique operational characteristics of the cleaved-coupled-cavity (C3) lasers1 (Fig. MII1-1) is the realization that the effective optical length of each cavity can be varied separately by controlling the injection current applied to each. This realization makes possible the first known practical electrically tunable single-frequency semiconductor laser. In operation, one diode, the laser diode, is always operated above threshold.
