Abstract
The fabrication and operation of phase coupled semiconductor laser arrays has been described previously.1-4 Single-lobe far-field patterns have sometimes been observed, but multi-lobe patterns are much more common in these devices. The accurate control of array fabrication, to reproducibly obtain single-lobe array emission corresponding to in-phase oscillation of adjacent elements appears difficult to achieve. Furthermore, the gain-guided structures generally used for these arrays exhibit multi-longitudinal-mode emission spectra.1,2
