Abstract
In independent research efforts, the technique of laser frequency modulation (FM) was developed for fast reading of absorption holes in a frequency-domain optical memory and as a means to provide sharp frequency discriminants for use in stabilizing the frequency of a dye laserd.1 It was also realized that absorption spectroscopy sensitivity could be improved because the FM signal is shifted well away from low-frequency laser noise. We discuss the progress that has been made in exploiting this potential advantage.
