Abstract

The object of the United Kingdom project is to mount a comprehensive series of experiments to characterize the performance of the free-electron laser in both the amplifier and oscillator configurations. A uniform wiggler enables a relatively high-gain performance to be achieved over a wide range of output wavelengths, and in the region of 10.6 μm well-developed laser technology is available for optical components and diagnostic facilities.
