Abstract
The optical klystron (OK) (Ref. 1) is a higher-gain laser than the conventional free-electron laser (FEL).2 However, the same mechanism that permits the higher small-signal gain also limits the saturation intensity.3 This comes about because the bunching action of the dispersive magnet that contributes to higher gain also reduces the saturation intensity owing to debunching of the electrons at higher power.
