Parity Violation in Atoms

Abstract

The electroweak theory of Weinberg, Salam, and Glashow predicted the existence of parity-violating neutral currents (PVNC’s). Ten years ago, Bouchiat and Bouchia1 pointed out that such neutral currents would give rise to parity-violating effects in atoms that might be observable. Since that time there has been considerable effort to measure these effects using a variety of laser-based techniques. In recent years this work has produced results of steadily improving precision for a number of atoms. As well as exploring this entirely new area of atomic structure, these results provide improved tests of the electroweak theory.
