Abstract

The thermooptical generation of sound in liquids by laser impact has been studied extensively.1,2 It has been shown that laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) permits the measurement of extremely small bulk absorptivities α ≳ 10−6 cm−1. On the other hand, investigations on strongly absorbing liquids have been restricted hitherto to the study of generation mechanisms and propagation characteristics of the acoustic transients.3,4 Here we report on a novel application of pulsed IR-PAS to absorbing liquids, which permits the analysis of thin liquid layers present on the surface of another liquid like water.
