Abstract

Numerical simulations showing the effect of spontaneous background noise in the dynamics of mode locking by synchronous pumping are presented. We demonstrate that this can cause macroscopic perturbations in the mode-locked pulses under nominally steady-state conditions1 and that the cavity length for which this effect is minimized is shorter than that required for generation of single short pulses.
