Abstract
The Lorenz equations which describe the simplest case of a laser (traveling wave, single mode, homogeneously broadened) are known to yield instabilities and chaotic dynamics. The requirement for this to occur is that the decay times of population, polarization, and optical field be comparable. Systems in which this condition is typically fulfilled are laser-pumped gas lasers.
