Abstract

The dynamics of two-level systems in both optically thin and optically thick media is analyzed from a new perspective. Our purpose is to deepen understanding of how the pulse shape affects the nonlinear atomic response. The two-state response is strongly modified whether or not the pulse preserves its shape when transformed to the spectral (momentum) space.
