Abstract

We studied the 2 + 1 muitiphoton ionization (MPI) of NH3 at 308 nm with two-photon resonance via the vibronic levels B˜(6) and C˜(1), one of which is close to the other in diffusive molecular beam conditions. Three mass peaks, due to NH2+, NH3+, and NH4+, were observed at 308 nm. The mass peak for NH2+ is very small, while those for NH3+ and NH4+ are much larger. A plot of logarithm ionization current vs logarithm laser power for NH4+ gives a slope of 2.95 and for NH3+ a slope of 2.93 at lower power and a slope of 1.8 at higher power. They demonstrate experimentally the 2 + 1 MPI mechanism.
