Abstract

A well-known advantage of UV laser beams for high-irradiance laser plasma production is the higher ablation pressure1 and lower electron preheat2 compared to similar irradiances in the visible or IR. However, previous measurements have been limited to small spots by the available laser energy. In the present experiments, several of the 2-kJ 3ω 1-ns laser beams of Nova have been used to produce laser irradiances up to 1013 W/cm−2 with relatively large spot sizes.
