Abstract

A novel coherent optical technique for Ramsey spectroscopy of rf transitions in free atoms is reported. The method relies on resonance Raman processes to excite and probe optically sublevel coherence in atomic ground states and optically excited states using two separated atom-field interaction regions. Phase-sensitive information on the sublevel resonance is obtained by optical heterodyne detection of the probe beam signal that is created in the second interaction region.
