Abstract
It has been recently demonstrated that third harmonic generation (THG) in noble gases may give rise to intense nonresonant atomic multiphoton ionization signals. Our work reveals several other examples of the consequences of THG produced in noble gases by strongly focused (~100-GW cm−2) laser beams: At high pressures (P > 5 Torr) of pure Kr gas, THG generated by tuning a dye laser above the 5s′(½)J = 1 level (342-349 nm) may lead to excitation of the second excited state of a Kr2 dimer, which subsequently ionizes by absorbing a single near-UV dye laser photon.
