Abstract
The optical piston1 is a spectacular demonstration of light-induced drift (LID). Theory predicts that for alkali–noble gas mixtures the magnitude of LID depends on the ground-state hyperfine (hf) structure and the sign of LID on the excited-state fine structure (fs) of the alkali involved.2,3 Therefore, we initiated a study of LID for the case of Rb where the hf and fs level splittings are much larger than for the previously studied case of Na.1 Here we report observation of the optical piston for the case of Rb.
