Abstract
The study of transient processes in metals is a relatively new area of investigation made possible through recent advances in the generation and amplification of ultrashort optical pulses.1-3 Because of inherently high densities, most transient phenomena in metals occur on a time scale ranging from femtoseconds to a few picoseconds. In addition, in contrast to semiconductors, the observed changes in optical properties for metallic systems are relatively small. Thus investigations of transient phenomena require high detection sensitivity as well as femtosecond time resolution.
