Abstract
When the ratio of the cavity length of a standing-wave dye laser and that of its free-running multi-mode argon pump laser is a rational number n/m, the dye laser output becomes doubly periodic with periods T and T/n, where T is the round-trip time of the dye laser cavity. This behavior was discovered by observing the optical and rf spectra of the dye laser as its length was varied.
