Abstract
Successful lasing on 3p → 3s transition lines in neonlike Se24+ and Y29+ ions was reported originally1 and recently extended to Mo32+ using a λ = 0.53μm 450-ps 1-kJ laser as a driver. We report for the first time 3p → 3s lasing in the neonlike Cu19+ ions using a λ = 1.05-μm 2-ns 350-450-J driving laser pulse. The elongated Cu plasma2 along which lasing takes place is produced by focusing the driving laser beam to a 24-mm long line of 200-μm width onto a Cu target for an irradiance of (4-5) × 1012 W/cm2. The target is composed of a 1000-3000-Å thick copper deposition on a 1200-Å thick Formvar substrate. The length of the target is varied from 6 to 20 mm.
