Noise reduction in the relative phase of two lasers

Abstract

Two optical transitions can develop correlated spontaneous emission when they are subject to resonant coupling. Recent studies have considered both the folded three-level system1 and the cascade scheme.2 Coupling may be provided by a variety of mechanisms including rf, microwave, or optical coupling between the extreme levels. Alternative resonant coupling can be effected via optical sidebands produced by parametric modulation at the resonance frequency, including weak modulation of the gain medium's index of refraction or of the cavity structure.
