Polarization instability and all-optical switching in periodically twisted fiber filters

Abstract

Periodic mode coupling in birefringent-fiber polarization couplers and filters introduces a wavelength-dependent power conversion between the birefringence axes.1 For phase-matched coupling the perturbation period Lp equale the fiber beat length Lb. An input beam polarized along an axis (say x) rotates by a small angle 2θ after a distance Lb, and complete power transfer occurs for a fiber length Lc corresponding to N = π/(4θ) coupling periods [Fig. 1(a)]. The presence of the self-induced nonlinear birefringence leads to a power-dependent phase shift between the linearly polarized modes of a high-birefringence fiber.2
