Abstract

This paper demonstrates that it is possible to trap neutral atoms utilizing radiation pressure forces produced by static laser beams. This type of trap is highly desirable since it is typically much bigger and deeper than neutral atom traps based on stimulated (also known as dipole or gradient) forces.
