Quantum optics with a single trapped ion

Abstract

The fluorescence emitted by a single atom or ion exhibits quantum effects which are usually unobservable in the fluorescence from a collection of atoms. Photon antibunching and quantum jumps are examples of this type of phenomenon. In an effective three-level atom, where the ground state has strong radiative coupling to an excited level and only weak coupling to another excited level, the fluorescence Intensity may suddenly switch between on and off as the atom jumps between its energy levels.
