LIGHT INDUCED REORIENTATION IN AN ARTIFICIAL ANISOTROPIC KERR MEDIUM

Abstract

It has been suggested1,2 that a liquid suspension of non spherically shaped particles could provide a novel artificial nonlinear medium sensitive to light polarization due to the fact that reorientational torques act on the particles. Alignement effects and a consequently birifringence are thus to be expected. Moreover, the response time of the obtained nonlinearity should be much shorter than the one measured in isotropic artificial media.
