Abstract

In this paper we present some new results on the quantum limits to light amplifiers, Recently sources of squeezed light with less quantum fluctuations than the vacuum in one quadrature have become available.(1-3) The question arises, is it possible to amplify the coherent component of such squeezed light sources without degrading the signal to noise ratio? It is well known that the amplification process adds quantum noise to the signal and the problem is to find how to avoid this added noise contaminating the low noise quadrature of the signal.
