Abstract

Recent interest in making x-ray pulses by exciting solid targets with ultrashort optical pulses has been motivated by the possibility1 of obtaining 1) higher x-ray conversion efficiencies by heating only the small volume within the optical penetration depth and 2) shorter emission times by exploiting rapid conductive cooling in. the solid density plasmas to turn the x-ray emission off. A short burst of x-rays would be useful for x-ray pumping short wavelength lasers and for time-resolved x-ray studies.
