Abstract
High resolution laser spectroscopic studies of bound Rydberg series in the two-electron earth-alkaline atoms have provided important information on configuration interaction and electron correlation effects. Experiments on helium give the opportunity to investigate Rydberg series of the simplest two-electron system below the first ionization limit in the absence of doubly-excited configurations.
