Abstract
The branching waveguide, such as Y-junction, is one of the most basic components in guided-wave optical circuits or integrated optics. Al though the problem of branching waveguides has been discussed in several papers[1-4], any clear explanation has not been given for the mode-branching property. In this paper, mode separation properties at the waveguide junctions with sufficiently small branching angles are discussed. An interesting rule for the mode separation is derived from the analysis using the beam propagation method[5]. Also an application is proposed for the series expansion of the optical field distribution in a multimode waveguide.
