Abstract
We have measured the cross section for associative ionization in ultra-cold laser-trapped sodium atoms. The measured rate coefficient for the process at a temperature of (0.75 ± 0.25) mK is cm3 s−1, which implies a cross section of 8.6 × 10−14 cm2.[1] In contrast, the cross section at a velocity corresponding to an energy of 20 Κ has been measured [2] to be about 10−16 cm2 and is decreasing with decreasing temperature.
