Recent Developments in Diode Pumped Rare Earth Lasers

Abstract

Previous work on. diode pumped solid state lasers has concentrated largely on Nd:YAG. The high intrinsic efficiency, Low heat Loading and potential for long lived operation have been amply demonstrated in many reports. Less favorable is the economics of the situation given the high present cost of laser diode arrays and the low duty cycle obtained in pumping neodymium at low to moderate repetition rates because of the short fluorescence lifetime of neodymium in typical crystals (~ 200usec ).
