Chaos in lasers: practical and metrological implications

Abstract

Deterministic chaos, even though super-finally similar to noise-induced fluctuations, is in fact different. Indeed it appears even after careful control of noise sources, since it is intrinsic to the dynamics of a system with a few (just three) degrees of freedom, that is, ruled by a few (three) equations. Thus any nonlinear system has regular motion if it has only one or two degrees of freedom.
