Abstract

Transverse mode competition in lasers is well known. It can give rise to such phenomena as mode beating, quasiperiodic or chaotic output, and spatiotemporal chaos. In appropriate conditions the empty cavity modes are stable and able to lock in frequency and in phase, giving rise to a single frequency multimode output in which both the total intensity and its transverse profile are stationary in time.1
