Design and operation of a Raman free electron laser with Bragg resonators

Abstract

We have been active in the development of a millimeter wave Raman free electron laser (FEL) with a superradiant configuration. The first experiment in 1985 used a pulse line accelerator (0.5 MeV/1 kA, 60-ns single pulse) and achieved power levels typically of ~1 MW, but efficiency is small (0.2%).
