Phase measurements of surface IR-visible sum frequency generation: determination of polar orientation of molecules at surfaces

Abstract

Knowledge of the orientation of molecules at interfaces is essential for many areas of basic and applied science. Infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) can be used to obtain the vibrational spectum of molecular monolayers at any interface accessible by light. The average tilt and width of the orientational distribution of a group within a surface molecule can be deduced from the SFG signal intensity.
