Abstract
It is still an open question whether there exists a fundamental trade-off between the third-order susceptibility χ(3), absorption loss α, and pulse duration τ. For a conventional optical nonlinear process in which pulse duration τ is much larger than the longitudinal and transverse relaxation time constants T1 and T2 of an atomic system, a universal relation is easily obtained. For such a case, the χ(3) and α values are calculated by the usual theory,1 giving
