Abstract

We are presently engaged in a study of the radiative properties of atoms confined within micron sized cavities, a topic generally known as cavity QED. In previous work we demonstrated the strong suppression of spontaneous decay from an excited state1 and the closely related London-van der Waals energy level shifts.2 The latter were measured by observing the deflection of an atomic beam toward the walls of the cavity.
