Abstract
The direct generation of excited states with incoherent x-rays is one of the earliest proposed[1] methods for producing amplification in the x-ray range. However, this approach requires a sufficiently intense source of x-rays. For a gain 10 cm-1 at λ = 1 nm, a state-selective energy deposition rate Φ ≅ 1014 W/cm3 is required.[2] An efficiency η ≅ 103 for the state selectivity would increase the required rate to ~1017 W/cm3.
