Abstract
There is much interest in the generation of beams of extreme power and brightness from pulsed lasers. The amplification of chirped pulses in solid state lasers, and their subsequent compression has produced the highest powers to date but with some difficulties in achieving sufficiently high contrast ratio in the recompressed pulse.[1] A second approach uses direct amplification of subpicosecond pulses in excimer lasers and has demonstrated the highest brightness.[2] We have investigated and will present results on two further approaches.
