Excess Phase Noise in an External-Cavity Semiconductor Laser Due to the Presence of Side Modes

Abstract

It is well known that a solitary semiconductor laser that is nominally single-mode shows excess noise due to competition of the lasing mode with (unavoidable) nonlasing side modes.[1,2,3] Here we show experimentally that similar excess noise occurs in an external-cavity semiconductor laser.
