Abstract

Optical coherence domain reflectometry (OCDR) or low coherence interferometry has been demonstrated for optical ranging measurements in a number of applications including integrated optics and biomedical applications.[1−4] In this paper we demonstrate a new technique called optical coherence tomography (OCT) which is an extension of OCDR and permits two-dimensional cross sectional imaging.[5] A fiber optically integrated OCT and OCDR system which utilizes a compact, low coherence diode light source is described. OCDR and OCT techniques permit noncontact optical measurement with micrometer resolution and >90 dB sensitivity. We demonstrate applications for the characterization of optical components as well as for medical diagnostics in ophthalmology.
