Multi-Terawatt Chirped Pulse Amplification Studies on the Vulcan Nd-Glass Laser Facility

Abstract

Chirped pulse amplification (CPA) provides a technique for the generation of ultra-short laser pulses of very high power (>1TW) from solid state laser systems without the problems associated with non-linear processes and optical damage in high gain laser amplifiers.[1] We report the development of a Neodymium: glass laser system with an output power of 1.5TW. The power was limited by the damage threshold of the pulse compression gratings available, and is directly scaleable to 10TW. The system is capable of generating focused intensities on target of 4.1018 Wcm−2.
