Femtoscience, a snapshot of the future

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In the last two decades, laser short pulse measurement techniques have improved by more than three orders of magnitude- Presently, we are able to measure dynamical processes with a time resolution of just a few femtoseconds (10-15 sec.). These techniques have begun to have a major impact in chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. Recent measurements have resulted in new discoveries ranging from the first step in vision to phase memory in liquids. This talk will review this emerging science and will discuss its implications.
