Water structure at hydrophobic interfaces studied by sum-frequency generation

Abstract

Despite the familiar notion of wetting or nonwetting of a solid surface by water, our understanding of the phenomenon at the molecular level has been very limited, mainly due to lack of tools to probe the buried interfaces. In this paper we use optical sum- frequency generation, which is highly surface-specific, to obtain vibrational spectra of OH stretching modes of water at different hydrophobic water interfaces. The results provide a coherent picture of water structure at such interfaces.
