Cooperatively induced dephasing

Abstract

In heavily doped rare-earth crysals, interacting ions exhibit correlated dynamics which have already shown significant applications to upconversion lasers and high power phase conjugation. Dephasing in these cooperative systems has not been investigated systematically before and would be expected to be modified significantly by phonon-assisted energy pooling processes and excitation transfer. We present good evidence that optical dephasing in concentrated Tm3+:YAlO3 can occur by cooperative excitation transfer to a higher lying Stark level which initiates a phonon-assisted decay to the lower, optically excited level.
